Death of King Abdullah Makes Queen Elizabeth II World’s Oldest Monarch

British queen is the second-longest reigning monarch in the world.

Queen Elizabeth II is now the oldest sovereign in the world following the passing of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, whose death was announced by the Saudi royal palace on Friday.
The Queen, who will turn 89 this year, acceded to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25 following the death of her father, King George VI. In September 2015, she is due to surpass her ancestor Queen Victoria’s record and become the longest reigning monarch in British history.

However, the British monarch is not the longest reigning monarch in the world, a distinction which goes to 87-year-old King Rama IX of Thailand, who has reigned since 1946.

Prince Charles, 66, who is next in line to the British throne, is set to be the oldest ever monarch to be crowned when he succeeds his mother. The previous holder of the record, William IV, was almost 65 when he became king in 1830. In November 2013 the current heir apparent became entitled to the statutory state pension when he reached the UK pension age of 65 years, a sum which the prince donates to charity.

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has been succeeded to the throne by his 79-year-old half-brother, Prince Salman. The brothers are both sons of the first monarch of the desert kingdom, Abdulaziz bin Saud, who reigned until his death in 1953.

Did You Know? By Fevzi Hussein

Heard this and thought it was just a hoax but guess this real life story is worth considering..

Cyprus Observer

‘Did You Know?’

By Fevzi Hussein

The merits of an arranged marriage have been argued for decades. Many moons ago, marriages were far less complex. Do not get arranged marriages mixed-up with forced marriages. In an arranged marriage each party has a choice (although this is debatable even in some arranged marriages), whereas in a forced marriage the parents dictate the running and the individuals involved are mere pawns in a ‘match made in hell’.

Some arranged marriages are the substance of real romance. Take my parents as an example. My dad came to the UK in 1961 to escape the turbulence that existed in Cyprus. Mrs Özgül Hüseyin and Mr Mehmet Hüseyin © Fevzi HusseinIn fairness he also left as an economic migrant, as there was not much hope for Turkish Cypriots to make a decent living in the North – in 55 years not much has changed on that point. My father took up wrestling on the…

How Marijuana Affects Your Brain, Backed by Science

This is what your brain looks like, on the inside, when consuming cannabis. The video below was written and created by our friends at AsapSCIENCE.

For centuries, humans have been using substances to alter their state of mind. From caffeine, cigarettes and alcohol, to more extreme drugs. But as the most commonly used illicit drug in North America, where does marijuana fit in? And how exactly does it affect your brain?

First, we need to understand how the brain functions. Your neurons are the cells that process information in the brain. By releasing chemicals called “neuro-transmitters” from the axon of one neuron to the dendrite of another they change the electrical charge of the receiving neuron, consequently exciting or inhibiting it.

If excited, the signal is passed on. Though it sounds simple, these signals work together and the effect is quickly compounded into complex configurations within milliseconds, flushing over the entire brain. This is what happens every single time you think, breath, or move.

So what is going on in your brain when you are smoking marijuana?

Well, unlike alcohol which contains molecules nothing like those in your body, cannabis contains molecules that resemble those produced in our very own brains – cannabinoids.

These cannabinoids circulate in much lower quantities compared to the large influx imposed by smoking. Specifically the chemical called Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, resembles a natural transmitter calledAnandamide. These cannabinoids are specialized neurotransmitters released by neurons having just fired. Neurons temporarily become unresponsive after firing, to prevent them from overreacting or being too dominant. This allows your brain to function in a calm and controlled manner.

But cannabinoids interrupt this approach in some parts of the brain. Instead, they remove the refractory period of neurons that are already active and cause your thoughts, imagination and perception to utterly magnify itself. This means once you begin your train of thought, it becomes the most significant and profound thing ever.

You can’t see the big picture or even recall your last epiphany, because you are caught up in the momentum of a particular idea, and your neurons keep firing until a new idea takes hold, and you go off on a new tangent.

These cannabinoids also affect the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in your brain. This often leads to a sense of euphoria, relaxation, pain modulation, and general enhancement of an experience, though sometimes causing anxiety. Furthermore, there are cannabinoid receptors in areas controlling short-term memory, learning, coordination, movement control and higher cognitive functions.

WOMEN AND WEED

Women love weed, and they’re not afraid to show it! Stoner girls, celebs, and working moms alike are loving the leaf, loud and proud. Here are 10 ways in which marijuana is good for you, girlfriends.

1. Marijuana is medicine.

Marijuana can soothe menstrual cramps, headaches, and lessen the discomfort of period-related bloating. Not to mention, it can de-stress you from PMS! Keep a tincture in your bag to medicate when you’re on your moon cycle. A woman knows: every little thing helps.

2. It’s an equal-opportunity substance.

Stoner girls are representing more and more nowadays, banishing the outdated stereotype that smoking pot is for boys. Weed is for women, weed is for men… weed for everyone!

3. Smoking weed unlocks creativity.

From William Shakespeare to Willie Nelson, creative types throughout the ages have used weed to free their minds, dreaming up plays, paintings, poems, novels and songs. Famous contemporary creative women who celebrate the herb include Patti Smith, Roseanne, Charlize Theron, Sarah Silverman, and Susan Sarandon. Burn one down, sisters.

4. Pot brings you closer to your girlfriends.

Smoking weed with other women can be a magical experience, often resulting in amazing, hilarious conversation accompanied by crazy amounts of delicious food. There are invariably deep, emotional moments as well, since we like to be in touch with our feelings. That’s not to say that we don’t get just plain goofy. Roll a fatty for your next dinner party and enjoy the lady palace magic!

5. It can help you feel good about your place in the world.

Smoking can be uplifting. An Hightime Magazine writer says this experience “After sharing a joint with a friend, I took an evening bike ride across the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a heart-opening experience following a hard day’s work in the city; the breeze off the water, the moon in the sky, the clatter of a passing train, and a beautiful high made me feel perfectly at ease in the moment”

6. Lay claim to time that’s just for you.

It’s difficult to set aside time for oneself while balancing work, family, friends and lovers. Smoking weed isn’t a replacement for spending time with loved ones, but it can help you cherish the time you take for yourself. Turn off your phone, put on a favorite album, and float away on your own for a while. It will rejuvenate you.

7. The right weed can energize you.

Not all weed makes you lazy. Try smoking or vaping a sativa like Jack Herer in the morning; its lemony, refreshing scent and heady high will have you running circles around your espresso-addicted friends.

8. Being high can put you on the same wavelength.

Good weed can bring you closer to the one you love, if you’re sharing your stash. On the other hand, if you and your significant other are smoking different strains, you may feel distanced from one another. Be aware, and share.

9. It can help you see things from another standpoint.

Sometimes, when you’ve over-thought something, a toke is all it takes to freshen your perspective and allow you to see it in a different light. This can be especially helpful when you’re having an argument with someone important to you. Stop fighting for a moment, and pass the peace pipe.

10. It can help you test your own limits.

As Reggie Watts says in our upcoming December feature interview, “I think that weed is kind of like when you see sports people training, where they have a parachute behind them or they’re in a swimming pool, and they’ve got all this resistance. That’s what weed is for me: It poses a challenge to be able to focus and let go at the same time, so you’re letting go but focusing in on a kind of pure connection to creativity.” I can’t put it any better myself.
